Cork City FC Women travel to the UCD bowl on Saturday to take on DLR Waves, with both sides looking to earn their first points of the season. Waves’ single game of the 2023 SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division resulting in an away loss to Peamount United, Becky Watkins scoring the only goal of the game with five minutes to play.
City go into the game with back-to-back losses, but Manager Danny Murphy was happy with a much-improved performance against Galway United after a disappointing opener away to Champions Shelbourne. “It was really positive last week in terms of our shape and how we performed and the level of commitment from the players.” An 89th minutes late Jenna Slattery free kick from halfway was wind assisted into the area and deceived the Cork City defence and keeper to end up in the back of the net, but it came as City were finishing the game strongly and were unlucky not to score.
“It was a positive performance, and those are things that we want to move into this week and start to consistently do, so the focus will continue to build on what was positive as we face into the DLR Waves game this weekend.”
DLR waves came out on top in all three games last season, emerging with a 3-0 win at Turner’s Cross between a pair of home wins. We need to go back to late 2021 for City’s last win over DLR waves when a Laura Shine hat-trick and a super team goal finished by Becky Cassin saw City run out 4-1 winners.
