Women’s Premier Division Action returns to Bishopstown today as Cork City FC host Athlone Town, led by former City favourite Ciarán Kilduff at 3pm. Tickets are available at €10 for adults with the game also available to watch on LOITV.
City are coming off their first league victory of the campaign after an impressive display against Treaty United in the Munster derby. The only goal of the game came from City’s Heidi O Sullivan in the fourth minute, manager Danny Murphy delighted with the result “I was happy with win last weekend, first half we played some really good football, but we all feel it wasn’t our best performance in the second half, but to win a game not being pretty, doing the hard bits is a real positive to take from the game.”
Athlone Town have won three of their four league games since the return of the summer break in mid-August. This included a 5-0 victory over 5th place Bohs. Their only defeat since the return of the summer break in all competitions was a narrow 2-1 defeat to Shels on September 2nd. Only Peamount have accumulated more points than Athlone in this period, but City go into the game buoyed by positive recent results.
“Athlone are a little different to what they were earlier in the season, they’re not as direct and try to play more football. There will be opportunities for us within the game because of that different style and we’re capable of facing that, implementing our game plan, and getting what we want out of the game. We just need to go out and be confident and play as we have been the last few games.”
A City win could take them above Treaty United in the table should Treaty be defeated by Galway United in Limerick this Saturday.
Ireland underage international Ellie O’Brien has been awarded City player of the month for September after some impressive displays.
