WNL: Cork City 2-1 DLR Waves

Cork City made it four wins in a row as they came out on top 2-1 against DLR Waves thanks to second half goals from Becky Cassin and Laura Shine in their latest Women’s National League game at Bishopstown on Sunday.

In a tight first half DLR had much of the possession and put pressure on the City goal however they rarely were able to create chances to really test the City defence, City however were still able to apply pressure of their own with Christina Dring having an early effort which was saved after she was set up by Sophie Liston. Maria O’Sullivan was forced into a good save to keep it at 0-0 in the 26th minute. City got more into the game as the half went on and right at the end of the first half had the clearest chances to make it 1-0 Sophie Liston set up Lauren Egbuloniu whose effort hit the post and rebounded to Christina Dring whose shot was just wide and the first half finished 0-0.

The second half saw City the more dominant side and they started putting more consistent pressure on the DLR goal with second half substitute Laura Shine having an effort go just wide and she was involved in another chance setting up Christina Dring who hit the post. City finally got the breakthrough in the 68th minute as Eabha O’Mahony got the ball to Becky Cassin who shot straight into the top of the net from 30 yards out to make it 1-0 to City.

DLR almost equalised immediately after the kick off having an effort go just wide of the post. City doubled their advantage when second half substitute Shaunagh McCarthy set up Laura Shine who put it away from the edge of the box to make it 2-0 to City. DLR pulled one back in injury time but it was too late to mount a comeback and City saw out the game which finished 2-1.

Cork City are next in action on the 26th of September when they travel to Ferrycarrig Park to play Wexford Youths with a 6.30pm kick off.
