WNL: City 3-2 Sligo

Goals from Laura Shine, Becky Cassin and Eva Mangan gave Cork City a 3-2 win against Sligo Rovers on Saturday in their latest SSE Airtricity Women’s National League match at Turner’s Cross.

The start of the first half was a tight affair with few chances until City took the lead in the 13th minute through Laura Shine as a ball over the top from Nadine Seward found Shine who ran into the box and finished well to give City a 1-0 lead. The lead however would not last long as Sligo equalised in the 16th minute as Paula McGrory hit one in from distance.

The first half remained a tight affair with both sides pressing for goals however clear cut chances were rare, the best chance fell to Laura Shine in the 33rd minute as she struck a shot at goal that hit the post and deflected out of danger and the first half finished 1-1.

Both sides continued to battle in the second half with Nadine Seward coming close in the 55th minute but Amy Mahon in the Sligo goal saved well. Sligo would take the lead in the 61st minute as a ball over the top found Paula McGrory in penalty area where she scored from a tight angle on the right side of it to make 2-1. City fought back quickly as a ball forward in the 69th minute found Becky Cassin running into the box and she headed home to make it 2-2.

City pressed for the winner as in the 77th minute Lauren Walsh came close but her effort was just wide. City would get the winner in the 88th minute as free on the edge of the box was struck home by Eva Mangan to make it 3-2 to City at full time.

City are next in action next Saturday 27th of August as they travel to the UCD Bowl to face DLR Waves in the SSE Airtricity Women’s National Leaguewith a 2pm kick off.
