Recap

Cork City fell to a 4-1 defeat against Wexford Youths in their latest SSE Airtricity Women’s National League match at Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday evening. Wexford got off to the perfect start with a goal in the opening five minutes as Kylie Murphy hit a well struck shot into the top left corner of the net from the edge of the box. City almost struck back shortly afterwards with Eabha O’Mahony hitting a free kick just over the bar. At the other end City goalkeeper Abbie McCarthy had to be alert to stop Kylie Murphy from scoring. Much of the rest of the first half was a tense affair with City coming more back into the game with attacks into the Wexford half without truly testing the Wexford goal. City did come close to equaliser in the 36th minute as Eabha O’Mahony put a free kick into the penalty area where it found the head of Ciara McNamara who headed just over the bar. Wexford doubled their lead in the 41st minute applied a clinical finish to double the hosts lead going into the half time break. The second half started lively with both teams having half chances at either end without really testing either goalkeeper. Wexford however would come out on top of the exchanges with a two goals in quick succession to seal the points. Firstly Sinead Taylor struck from distance in the 59th minute to give the hosts a 3-0 lead and then two minutes later Ellen Molloy struck with a stunning volley from the edge of the box to make it 4. City managed to get a consolation goal late in the game as some good link up play between Eva Mangan and Laura Shine set up Mangan to strike home to make it 4-1 but it was not enough and Wexford Youths ran out 4-1 winners. City are next in action at Turner’s Cross next Saturday 31st of July hosting Peamount United in the SSE Airtricity Women’s National League with a 2pm kick off. Cork City: Abby McCarthy, Lauren Walsh, Danielle Burke, Ciara McNamara (Tiffany Taylor 74’), Lauren Singleton (Nathalie O’Brien 55’), Eabha O’Mahony, Eva Mangan, Leah Murphy (Kate O’Donovan 55’), Laura Shine, Sarah McKevitt, Christina Dring
