Recap
A second half turnaround gave Waterford all the points at the RSC this evening, as they came from a goal down to defeat City.
John Caulfield’s side hit the front inside two minutes as Kieran Sadlier’s free kick was headed down by Aaron Barry, and Conor McCarthy was on hand to apply the finish.
Sadlier looked a real threat and he tested the keeper again on ten minutes with a deflected effort. City could have doubled their lead on twenty minutes when Cummins headed it down for the inrushing Buckley but the ball was cleared just as he looked set for a tap-in.
City continued to press and a couple of set pieces caused problems for the home side but City just couldn’t get that second goal.
Two minutes before half time, City really should have doubled their advantage when Waterford struggled to clear a couple of crosses but they just couldn’t apply a finish.
To no great surprise, Waterford came flying out of the blocks for the second half and they equalised just over five minutes after the restart, when Gavan Holohan’s cross was deflected into City’s own net by McCormack.
Just after the hour mark, City should have regained the advantage when McNamee found himself one-on-one with the keeper but he dragged his shot agonisingly wide.
The home side were having the better of things as the half wore on and they took the lead with ten minutes remaining when City failed to clear and Duffus headed home from point blank range.
City had a couple of set pieces and tried to force their way back into the game late on but failed to get anything on target. Deep into injury time, Garry Buckley and Steven Beattie, along with John Caulfield, were dismissed by the referee, along with Alan Reynolds, Bastien Hery and Stanley Aborah.
