Cork City FC have donated a cheque for €10,000 to UNICEF towards the charity’s aid work in Gaza.
A fundraising campaign was launched on the club’s inaugural International Day in September 2024. The second International Day was held at Turner’s Cross stadium yesterday evening as supporters donned their country’s colours in the match against Shamrock Rovers.
Aibhlín O’Leary, Head of Advocacy and Public Policy at UNICEF Ireland was at the stadium and the proceeds were handed over at half time to mark the significance of the donation on International Day at Turner’s Cross.
Commenting on the donation, she said: “We are deeply grateful to Cork City FC and its supporters for this generous donation to our Gaza appeal. Your solidarity will help us deliver urgent support to children and families in crisis, and reflects the very best of Cork’s community spirit. We are especially honoured that this donation was presented on International Night, a celebration of Cork’s rich diversity and global solidarity.”
The donation is part of Cork City FC’s ongoing efforts to support charities. On a local level, the club has a continued partnership with The Crann Centre, a charity that provides lifelong solutions for people with neuro-physical disabilities. The club also recently announced a free advertising slot for a chosen charity on their newly acquired billboards.
Dermot Usher, owner of Cork City FC added: “I’d like to thank all our fans for their continued support throughout the season and in helping us provide this donation through the sale of our international scarves. Your generosity and buy-in helps Cork City FC to go beyond being just a football club and extends to helping people and children that are most in need.”
