The players of Cork City FC Women’s and Amputee teams have joined forces to raise funds for Cork Penny Dinners.
On Saturday 30th of May, the players and staff of the women’s first team, Under 17 team and our amputee team will aim to run 15 combined marathons.
Women’s First Team Manager Rónán Collins explained how the idea came about: “One of our senior players, Éabha O'Mahony, ran a half marathon recently, and she came to us with the idea of running a full marathon during this period while she has some time to train. She was looking to raise money for a charity while doing so, so we shared the idea with the players in the women’s section of the club, and the amputee team as well, and we were delighted with the reaction from both players and staff.”
Cork City FC Chairman Declan Carey commented: “We are very pleased to support this initiative. It is great to see the players and staff coming up with the idea and putting it into practice. Cork Penny Dinners is a charity we have had a long association with, and we are glad to support them at this time when things are very difficult for many people.”
Speaking about the initiative on behalf of Cork Penny Dinners, Gary Heslin commented: “We would like to thank the Cork City FC Women’s players for this initiative, which we are very pleased to support. In the midst of this difficult time, staying fit and active is a challenge but also very important, and the fact that they have combined this with an effort to raise much-needed funds for ourselves is great to see. We would encourage people to support this, if they are in a position to do so.”
